REFLECTIONS

2008 - 2009 were eye-opening years for me. Despite the disappointments and family tragedy, I feel that I am stronger for the experience. I discovered that I have a strong network of friends and family who have helped me through the most difficult times of my life.

Exactly two months ago, we lost Yolanda. You don't realize how much of a vital part of the family that person is until there is a threat of them leaving or they are actually gone. It is always a good thing to remind yourself how important your loved ones are in your life and to personally tell them such, no matter how corny it makes you feel. Fortunately, I had that opportunity, that Saturday night before she passed. Maybe that is the reason why I am not having a difficult time dealing with it, and would say the same for my mom. As we both sat in my mom's kitchen, we both got her to smile and laugh. When the doctor officially told us, I thought her asking me to put some of my R&B songs from the 80s on a CD because she had just bought a brand new iPod.

I was emotionally numb, and sort of angry that morning after we returned home from the hospital, I promptly posted my emotions on my personal facebook page in a brief one sentence outburst that ended with "pray for us!" The outpouring of well wishers and supporters brought me to tears each time I read each response. "THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO RESPONDED!!!" I did not feel alone dealing with the pain.

The silliness of First Choice Productions… Those differences that we had in the past seem so petty…..

That same weekend, Friday, Yolanda walked into the office and said that she had been browsing all of the CactusPix websites, and that she was impressed with all of the work that I put into them. That made me feel really good about what we were doing. I am hoping that I wasn't short with her in my response and showed appreciation. I hadn't heard her give me such a complement since we were business partners in First Choice Productions in L.A. back in the late 80s – early 90s. Despite her beliefs, she never lost my love and support. Yes, there was a rift between us and some friends felt that they were in the middle; it was not our intention to put you there. That rift was slowly closing and we both were beginning to open up a dialog and talk about our projects.

Recently, I told my mom about a recent life decision that I had made and she told me how very concerned Yolanda was about my life and all of the recent problems that I am having. "Rodney usually has his stuff together. I bet he'll be up and running and better very shortly and back on track with his goals." That was another emotional moment for me and now I have a newly strengthened resolve, and a continued reach for success.

2010 and Beyond…

First of all, I must apologize for RCW MediaWorks, the fact that I let the distractions of life interfere with the success of a business. But, thanks to a patient and understanding business partner, we were able to shut that business down and start over, like the proverbial Phoenix. Our current projects and clients are allowing us to produce more powerful and meaningful videos.

Right now, I am in Vegas, and I am able to reflect on life without much distraction, believe it or not (I am here during one of the busiest time of the year). I realized that I haven't written a literary short story since 2004, nearly six years ago. I am now vigorously determined not to let anything or anyone distract me from reaching my goals. I need to get out from under this cloud and continue down that road.

I relish in the conversations with friends and family and cherish all of the advice and complements. Thanks for the support and words on encouragement from all of you.

I will keep you updated on the progress of CactusPix and my other endeavors….

UFOs sighted by Marines in Iraq

On the night of January 2nd 2008 a group of Marines on patrol in Iraq have a close encounter of the first kind with...?

2-6 Tetris From Russia With Love

This is the story behind the fiendishly addictive game, a tale of high stakes, intimidation and legal feuds set against the backdrop of Cold War tensions between East and West.

Director Interview

BBC Four: What was the attraction of this project to you?
Magnus Temple: I love stories where you look at something very specific but it says something about the general. You could make a programme about that time in Russian history but this reveals much more because it's about something surprising.

BBC Four: I'm not sure that many people will know that Tetris was invented in Russia...
MT: Exactly. Most people remember Tetris from the Game Boy but few know the context in which that came about and quite what a chance thing it was. I suspect that had Game Boy not been in development at the same time as Tetris was first getting popular then it would be just another obscure 1980s computer game.

BBC Four: This programme places it as a really interesting footnote to the Cold War...
MT: Very much so. To me, more than anything else I've ever looked at, it's really a game for its time. Everything about its development links so closely into that era's political and economic context. If it hadn't been for that moment in history Tetris would have been nothing. For a start it needed a certain level of technology to have ever been developed but it also needed that moment of political opening up to creep across the Iron Curtain and become a success in the West.

BBC Four: Despite those changes the documentary shows just how vast the gap was between the East and West...
MT: They were still very much stuck in the culture of the old ways. The institutions in the Soviet Union were only just being set up to deal with commercial enterprises. It actually took a few smart individuals such as our Mr Belikov. What struck me was how quickly they took up the game of capitalism and managed to play the different Western companies off each other in quite an audacious way. They were very open about the fact that basically, they were being complete sharks.

BBC Four: How did you approach structuring the film?
MT: It became very much the story of these four or five characters and that's very much the way we tried to play it - almost making them larger than life. You've got Robert Stein who almost became the fall-guy character; then there's Henk Rogers, who's the very smart, quick-moving American; you've got Belikov whose appearance is almost akin to a James Bond villain but ends up driving around San Francisco with his mate Henk Rogers. Finally there's Alexey Pajitnov, the guy who invented the game.

BBC Four: Considering the slightly shady business shenanigans that went on, was it at all difficult to get these people to talk?
MT: Alexey is a very unassuming guy. He likes the fact that the game is so well known but he's not really all that bothered by personal gain or fame. He had to be persuaded to get involved. You can imagine what it's like. He invents a game almost 20 years ago and it's the only thing people want to talk to him about even though he's still a professional games designer. He's had a lot of attention over the years but this was almost too much for him. Once he got into it I think he was very pleased.

Obviously someone like Henk Rogers was only too happy to talk to us because he becomes the kind of cowboy hero of the piece. Interestingly the same was true of Robert Stein. He doesn't come off that well from the wheeling and dealing that went on but was very open about his role. He has a very philosophical you win some, you lose some attitude.

Belikov was a much harder nut to crack. We didn't know we were filming with him until we got on the plane to Moscow and I'd had a lot of negotiations with his lawyer. The fear was that the government in Russia still has a lot of the same figures who were around at that time and for him to speak out about his role was a big deal - he was putting his head slightly above the parapet even now. He was tricky but once he said yes he was very open and friendly and told us the whole story. I'd imagined he'd be very guarded. Obviously his interview was in Russian so I hadn't a clue what was going but I could see from the translator's face that it was going very well!

CUPICtv Unexplained Phenomenon in the Air 3

Okay, I posted a series of videos that were test of CG FX for our upcoming CUPICtv series. Clearly in the description and the opening titles it states this. But there are idiots who don't read. I never said that these were real UFOs... If I had real videos of UFOs, I wouldn't post them in a stupid montage with production music.

Well here is video number three from way back February.

From the main description: More images of CG UFOs created for the upcoming CUPICtv web episodes.

Karl Rove Trashes Ted Kennedy on Day of Funeral?

Fox News made some effort to be respectful in its coverage of the death and funeral of iconic Democratic Senator Edward M Kennedy, but inviting Republican Karl Rove, the ultra-partisan advisor from George W Bush's Administration, to participate in the coverage was a mistake Fox News should have avoided as I show in this video.

The two short clips from Fox News in this video come from the Fox News program "Fox and Friends Saturday" which aired August 29, 2009, and which I could not find available online.

The photo of Sen. Ted Kennedy in this video as well as the text of Sen Kennedy's September 27, 2002, speech at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies titled "Eliminating the Threat: The Right Course of Action for Disarming Iraq, Combating Terrorism, Protecting the Homeland and Stabilizing the Middle East" is available at http://www.sais-jhu.edu/pressroom/mul...

And, finally, as always, you can find DOZENS and DOZENS more examples of Fox News bias on my Fox News bias playlist on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list...

Aborted Landing GE90 Engines Roar

An Air Canada Boeing 777-300ER makes her final approach to Heathrow Airport when suddenly the pilot aborts the attempt causing the GE90-115B engines to roar as the throttles are pushed to the maximum.

The reason the plane aborted the landing was because a Continental Boeing 777-224ER (N74007) hadn't cleared the runway in time either because it was too slow on approach or the Air Canada plane was too fast.

An amazing experience to be there almost underneath. We just hope our high definition, surround sound video lets you experience at least some of the thrill for yourselves.

2009 PROJECTS!!!

In 2008, we were light on our indie projects, but worked on quite a few of what I consider videos for our services side of business, Some weddings, a few musicians, training videos, and a few for charity. In reflection, I think that we worked on three projects that I would consider fictional shorts; Jason vs eHARMony, CUPICtv and a yet to be edited remake of out 2004 short, "THE EMMISARRY."

Although we made over 20 clips for CUPIC, they were mostly shot interview style and recycled clips from previous projects and the upcoming docu-fiction project that has been in post for two and a half years.

We are planning a busy production agenda for 2009. We have a few projects going into production soon.

CUPICtv: We will be posting casting notices for our upcoming episodes of this project. We will have production details and notices posted soon.

We will have a few short film projects that will go into production soon as well.

WHY PLAY GAMES????

We all know what's at stake here, but, the political positioning and game playing is still afoot. When I hear the statements like, "we won't be pushed around," or "we need to show them we want our agenda to be added to the Stimulus," I get incensed.

When an idiotic conservative talk show host blatantly says, " I HOPE OBAMA FAILS," I then realize that we have a long way to go in this country. "His plan panders to the far left liberal agenda. The only people who will benefit from it are slackers who don't work and want a handout." Check this out… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4YcwI4NlKA

Rush, I agree with you. The wrong plan could benefit slackers. We saw that with the $700 billion bank bailout that occurred last fall. It was the biggest welfare payout ever, and slackers did benefit from it. No lessons learned, no remorse, no accountability, just countless Americans losing homes, countless Americans jobless. And the news gets worse every day.

You might remind me, "Rod, he's just a shock jock, whose job it is to stir up trouble for ratings." I agree. He has a right to his own opinion, and I'll save it for another blog entry.

When I get angry or riled up, I begin pace the floor and mutter to myself. Love ones ask me, "Ummm Rod, are you ok?" I answer with a yes, and proceed to tell them what's on my mind.

The same day of the republican shenanigans, we hear that Citigroup was about to purchase a new corporate jet. You think that would be bad enough, not even close, the aerospace company wasn't Boeing or Gulfstream, it was Dassault a French company. And no, this isn't a dig at the French, but with the current economic situation, to support the French economy with the bailout money that was given blindly to you from us taxpayers is beyond words that I can think without adding these characters, "@#%$" Check this out… http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/27/obama-officials-tells-cit_n_161202.html

Do you really think you deserve a bonus after begging the government for bailout money? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/29/obama-18b-in-wall-street_n_162305.html

Well, there may be hope of sanity for the GOP, the republican governors, I think that they get the point since they see the budgets for their states and see the ever mounting deficit before their eyes.

This should not be a Stimulus for bailing out financial institutions that have failed; this should be all about infrastructure. You know, the bridges, the power grids, the railroads, the highways that are crumbling before our eyes. Why is it that a little ice can blackout a few states at the same time? Why did a bridge collapse in Minnesota?

INFRASTRUCTURE… It is considered wasteful spending by the GOP. I can't comprehend why the very thought of infrastructure is so demonized by the GOP. Thank you Rachel Maddow, you seem to get it… and thanks for not letting one off the hook so easily… Check this out http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/28902483#28902483

They are pushing tax cuts, blah, blah… "We have to stick to our conservative principles." Where were your principles during the past eight years? You let this happen…

"But two of those years the democrats took the house." No. The new democratic house and senate were elected in 2006, but they didn't officially take their positions until congress reconvened in the next fiscal year, i.e., 2007. This banking problem, which is the catalyst of this economic collapse, began in 2006, and well before that; it is funny how some conveniently forget that fact.

I do agree with CNBC's James Cramer, who feels that the stimulus should be a lot bigger than it is. Infrastructure touches many things; the steel industry, construction equipment, materials, and a slew of other industries that would also benefit… and the one most important factor in all of this, jobs… we need people to feel secure enough to spend and buy goods. You can throw all the money you want at Wall Street, the auto industry, if it doesn't touch the people of this country, than you just might as well have flushed the money down the toilet… And since you are throwing our money around, can you loan me a dollar…

Wil Wheaton praises Sony's 1,000,000/1 Contrast OLED TV's

Awesome technology.... Clip Detail

This is an amazing new technology that will enable extremely thin TV's with a contrast ratio that is about 100 times greater than the best consumer LCD's or Plasma's on the market today, thanks to the fact that they have no backlight. An advantageous side note of this means they are extremely power efficient. With tested response times of up to 0.01ms, which far exceed today's best. They are much brighter, with more vivid colors than existing TV's too.

A few issues remain to get this technology to the mainstream, the big issue being the organic material used has a relatively short lifespan. However this issue is being addressed, and as of recently the 11" version just hit the world market for real. Though at $2,499 it is "very expensive", even if it's technically cheaper to manufacture than any other TV technologies.

Expect full sized OLED TV's to hit the mainstream market in 2011 or later. Expect 30" models to start to appear in 2009.

CAKE DENIAL!!!

A father asks the question, why don't you like my three year old son and how come the only place that would put his name on a birthday cake is "Wal-Mart!!!!"

Well, read the story and judge for yourself...

Cake request for Adolf Hitler, 3, denied

EASTON, Pa. (AP) — The father of 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell, denied a birthday cake with the child's full name on it by one New Jersey supermarket, is asking for a little tolerance.

Heath Campbell and his wife, Deborah, are upset not only with the decision made by the nearby ShopRite, but also with an outpouring of angry Internet postings in response to a local newspaper article about the cake.

FAITH & REASON: Are we expected to live up to our names?

Heath Campbell, who is 35, said in an interview Tuesday that people should look forward, not back, and accept change.

"They need to accept a name. A name's a name. The kid isn't going to grow up and do what (Hitler) did," he said.

After ShopRite refused the request for the cake as inappropriate, the Campbells got a cake decorated at a Wal-Mart in Pennsylvania, Deborah Campbell said.

About 12 people attended the birthday party on Sunday, according to Heath Campbell.

The Campbells' other two children also have unusual names: JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell turns 2 in a few months and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell will be 1 in April.

Heath Campbell said he named his son after Adolf Hitler because he liked the name and because "no one else in the world would have that name."

Campbell said his ancestors are German and that he has lived all his life in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, which is across the Delaware River from Easton.

End of story...

Wow... What an idiot, seems a little lighthearted a phrase that I can use at this point.

WINDS OF CHANGE!!!!

2009 ARIZONA AUTO SHOW, SHORT AND SIMPLE!

Over the holiday weekend we visited the annual car show that was held at the all new Phoenix Convention Center in down town. This visit spun much excitement for me, as I see a shift towards the right direction for automakers, fuel efficiency and thinking green. Maybe you might argue that the BIG THREE had to shift out of economic necessity. This may be true, and anyone who doesn't have their head in the sand and has been watching the news lately knows that we are at a crossroads, economically and environmentally. It's time to recognize that hey crude oil is a finite resource, and our nation's dependence on it for the only fuel source is beyond idiotic. Would the BIG THREE continue with foolhardy attempt of business as usual? I hope not.

Well, the auto show was interesting, my last visit was to the 2006 show and my mindset back then was slightly different than it is now. Yes, back then I was still looking at Hybrids and more fuel efficient cars, but I was also looking at the cool cars and trucks. This year, my thoughts were fuel efficiency and the environment. Okay, some cool cars were on the agenda as well. You'll see it in the upcoming video.

In the past I never paid much attention to visitors' idle chatter or conversations around the cars that I was sampling. In the years that I attended the show, the first one that I attended in AZ was 1995, I've had only one incident with a patron that was what I would consider a negative interaction. At the 2000 auto show, myself and two friends sat in the all new Toyota Echo, and the conversation was admittedly negative. As far as looks and feel, we felt that it was the worst car in the Toyota line and that we wished that they would bring back the Tercel. We weren't downing it for its fuel efficiency, it had one of the best, but I could strap some RC motors on a skateboard and call it fuel efficient, wouldn't be pleasing to drive. We expressed that opinion amongst ourselves inside the car. Unbeknown to us that a proud owner of an Echo was within earshot, she stuck her ugly face in the passenger window and blurted out, "MY HUSBAND AND I BOUGHT ONE OF THESE AND WE LOVE IT." She then walked away. I think that she was within earshot when my friend from the rear seat retorted at an elevated level, "I'M SORRY… FOR YOU!!!!"

Recently, I do believe that my mindset has changed when I visit these venues. I want to know what is on the minds of the average American. I want to know if I am alone in wanting to see less dependence on foreign oil. I am not, but I want to hear it from people who not just environmentalist or economists. So as I admired and took pictures of the cars, I heard some of the conversations, and I wasn't trying to listen either. For what I gathered from that alone, and mind you this is no way scientific, people are looking at cars more economically and conservatively. Many liked the idea of alternative fuels and hybrids. Many were commenting on the EPA ratings on the vehicles and the lack of ratings on others. But having your ears open can lead to hearing the other side as well.

I was in the Volkswagen section and a group of guys walked by and made comments about how these aren't cars for a real man. They proceeded to Chevy to look for a full sized Silverado. I'll save my comments on that for the next blog entry. And it gets worse. "Ha, I'll buy a Volvo, as soon as you buy an Audi," and sadly they were serious. Then the finale… We were walking from Chrysler to Toyota and one lady made a comment after her husband made positive comments about how he liked the direction that car companies are going with the green and fuel efficiency. He liked what was available now. "These cars are too small; I'd rather have a full-sized SUV."

Well, until the next car show…

True event... One day in the summer of 2001, Jeremy Kirk made his routine hike up the small mountain behind his mother's house. On that day, he encountered a mysterious helicopter and it's occupants at the top of the hill. Pictures of the hill and the antenna were added to this updated video.

MYSTERY SOLVED - VIRAL MARKETING

Well, from what has been gathered about the mysterious red sealed letters, it is morethanlikely part of a clever viral marketing campaign. From what was provided in postings on both JC Hutchins site and Screen Rant it is related to a new vampire series to debut on HBO, TRUE BLOOD.

The hunt for clues led people to a website, http://revenantones.com/ that shows a chair in front of a blue screen and a countdown. After the clock winds down to zero, a lady appears, sitting in a chair, wearing headphones and occasiionaly rambling about entry into the site.

From what I can see, the site has recycled the clock and at the time of this posting is now at 008:32:01... More information to follow...

Here are some useful links for you...

RED SEAL LETTER

True story- Yesterday Jeremy Kirk, writer, received a letter in the mail with no return address and a weird stamp. inside was a black envelope containing a vellum card with strange markings and an odd red seal. Is this some sort of viral marketing ploy. It is a mystery. Several other are coming forward claiming to have received the same letter, but symbols vary.
This is report was also posted on our blog page... http://cactuspix.blogspot.com/

There's a growing list of responders who have had the same experence on JC Hutchins' site... http://jchutchins.net/site/2008/05/21...

There are images of the different card that people have received on this site... http://chishio.jp/ It's roughly a Japanese word for blood.

SOMETHING WEIRD!!!

Okay, so far no one has an explanation for something that my good buddy, Jeremy Kirk, got in the mail yesterday that has everyone stumped. When he went to pick up his mail, he found an envelope that was made of what can be best described as vellum paper. On the front of the envelope was his name and mailing address and a weird Stamps.com net-stamp with a weird logo on it; the initials "tb." Inside this envelope was another, smaller black envelope with no markings or print except that it was sealed with a wax stamp. Inside was a card that seemed to be made with the same vellum paper as the original envelope. The card has a series of symbols or hieroglyphs in a weird order and a red seal or stamp that was put their by hand.

This had Jeremy so baffled that he spent most of the day searching for an explanation. The one possible conclusion that mostly everyone is coming to is that it is some sort of viral marketing campaign. Possibly. Then a few people have said to me, "Hey Rod, come clean, this is some stunt you are pulling for CUPICtv." Well, I will not hesitate to drop the name of my new pet project, and I am a bit jealous that I didn't come up with the idea, because it is clever and it is freaking out Jeremy, but NO. This is not a campaign that is in any connection with CUPICtv. See, I just dropped the name in this blog a second time...

Other explanations vary; The aliens are saving resources and are not making crop circles but are using the US Postal Service instead. Alien abduction victims are getting these appointment cards that are telling them they are about to get probed. The list goes on.

If you know what the heck this is then contact us... info@cactuspix.com

Maybe it is a stupid viral ad campaign, (jealousy talking), and that he will get the answer in the near future.
